Employer contributions are taxed (ESCT) at a rate based on your income before they reach your account. The government pays 25 cents for every dollar you contribute, up to $260.72 a year, for members aged 18 to 64 earning $180,000 or less. Investment returns and fees are not included.

2026 changes

  • The default employee and employer rate rose to 3.5% on 1 April 2026, and is scheduled to reach 4% on 1 April 2028.
  • Employees can ask IRD for a temporary 3% rate for 3 to 12 months.
  • Employer contributions now extend to eligible 16 and 17 year olds.
